Northfield Glass restores the heritage of town pub

Tags:   |   Added:

The new PVC-U frames complement the heritage look of the building perfectly but it’s warmer and there’s less road noise.

The village’s residents obtained a government loan to buy the pub when it came up for sale in 2013, fearing the loss of an important part of their community.

“It was clear to see the pride that local people had in the pub”, explains Northfield Glass’ Managing Director, Fred Atkinson. “It was very important to the Parish Council that the replacement windows were stylistically true to a building of its era and that the original grey colour of the old timber frames was maintained.

“Everyone was impressed with VEKA’s Fully Sculptured casement and Vertical Sliding windows. Georgian bars and sash horns helped to complete the period look, and the Agate Grey shade from VEKA’s Variations colour range was a near-direct match for the original windows. All in all, it combined to give the building a really inviting appearance – essential in a good pub!

“Obviously, one of the main benefits of installing PVC-U windows is their longevity. The old timber frames that came out of the pub had perished significantly – an inevitable symptom of using wood unless regular, costly and time-consuming maintenance is carried out. PVC-U offers modern day standards of weather and noise insulation too, so it’s easy to see why many are choosing this option to update heritage and period properties.”

Rodney Hodgkins, Chairman of the Bishampton and Throckmoreton Parish Council commented: “We’re thrilled

to see The Dolphin returning to its former glory with the installation of these new windows.

“Fred and the team at Northfield Glass did a great job and we’d have no hesitation in recommending them, and VEKA’s products to others. The fitters arrived on time, worked with unsurpassed levels of cleanliness and tidiness and, what’s more, Lee – the landlord – was still able to run the pub without their work intruding. No wonder so many villagers have taken the business cards they left!
“The fact that Northfield Glass is a VEKA Approved Installer also gave us the peace of mind that we’re dealing with a reputable company who meet all the legal requirements, such as supplying CE Marked products.”

Fred Atkinson, Northfield Glass quotes: " Thanks to VEKA, we had all the products at our disposal to fulfil this job – and others like it – to the complete satisfaction of our client. Customers trust the VEKA name and, now as an Approved Installer, we’re able to professionally promote our business, with our logo proudly displayed alongside theirs. We’re thrilled that the residents of Bishampton are so pleased with the results of this job, and wish The Dolphin a long and successful future".

Window replacement delights Hatcham College
Funded by the government's Condition Improvement Fund, The Window Company (Contracts) has just completed an impressive window replacement project at Hatcham College in South East London, part of the prestigious Haberdasher's Askes' Schools Federation.  The award winning commercial installer was appointed as the principle contractor by Arcadis Consulting, working on behalf of the school for 3-18 year olds.  Parts of the historic Hatcham College date back to 1890, so the challenge for The Window Company (Contracts) was to supply and install windows which were in keeping with the age and character building but still represented best value. Because they are entirely independent, they were able to successfully identify a range of different products from a number of different suppliers which perfectly matched the different elements of the specification.  This included six 4600(h) x 2000(w) bespoke sapele hardwood double glazed sash windows for the school hall from NJL Joinery in Essex, painted white on the exterior but left varnished in the natural wood on the interior to match the hall's existing panelling. These were fitted with Guardian SunGuard SuperNeutral glass to minimise solar gain and even feature the original openers which The Window Company (Contracts) expertly restored and refitted. In other parts of the building, they installed a mix of arched head vertical sliders and tilt and slide windows with Astragel bars, fabricated by Glazerite in VEKA's Matrix profile which matched the external appearance of the timber they were replacing. They also created a new opening in the dining hall and fitted a new set of Comar Commercial aluminium double doors.  The Window Company (Contracts) has extensive experience in the education sector and its team are all CRB checked and fully trained to work on school sites. It has the flexibility to be able to deploy fitters at short notice to work during school closure times and is renowned for its commitment to always delighting clients. Mary Williams, Business Manager at the school, was impressed with their approach: "What we liked was that The Window Company (Contracts) did exactly what we wanted on the project and not just what suited them best. We are delighted with the products they recommended, particularly the new timber sash windows, and with the attention to detail they showed on every aspect of the project.  We knew that we could trust everyone on the team and, with one project manager responsible for everything on site, they were very easy to work with. Nothing was too much trouble and we would definitely work with them again."

Mill renovation for University
K2 Aluminium Systems, an installer of the Glazerite UK Group recently completed a redevelopment project in Halifax for Leeds Beckett University Business Centre.  The project consisted of 125 windows as part of the larger multi-million pound transformation programme on the old weaving mill located on Horton Street in Halifax.  The architectural aluminium specialist installed VEKA’s M70 frames in grey, which were manufactured by Glazerite’s Bolton Division. Sales Manager for Glazerite, Pete Smith, explains: “The Matrix 70 system, characterised by its 5 chambers and clean chamfered lines, provides a modern, energy efficient solution that looks equally at home when used for new build projects or refurbishment projects such as this one. The required styles looked complex in design but were easy to manufacture thanks to our state-of-the-art multi-headed welding and cleaning facilities.  “K2 needed a quick turnaround to fulfil their tight fitting schedule, installing a floor per week to meet the completion deadline, and our nationwide coverage meant we could deliver as and when required.  “The frames themselves were matched to the original timber window style to keep in touch with its period façade, and this project is another great example of thermally efficient, modern materials being used to allow a historic building to live on for many years to come.”  As part of its partnership with Calderdale Council, Leeds Beckett University is launching a new initiative to drive growth amongst early-stage and growing businesses. The University Business Centre will be based at Piece Mill in Halifax, next to historic Piece Hall, and will re-open later this year.  Piece Mill is an impressive converted mill providing open plan, affordable office and meeting space plus a range of business support in the centre of Halifax. The centre is part of a network of Leeds Beckett University Business Centres that have been operating for more than 15 years. Over 200 businesses across the region are currently located in Leeds Beckett’s private, shared and co-working spaces which to date have supported over 800 businesses to accelerate their growth. Colour-coding Windows at New Build Special School
When the specification for a new-build special school called for a colour coding of windows with unusual bespoke reveals and cills, the solution came in a combination of PVC-U windows set in made-to-order aluminium surrounds.  Birkenhead-based K2 Aluminium Systems Ltd, despite its name, is also an established PVC-U installer, so it was ideally placed to come up with the solution based on pressed aluminium cills and exterior reveals around VEKA frames from the Glazerite UK Group. Palmerston School, Liverpool, is a special school for pupils aged 11 to 19 with multiple learning difficulties, and is now housed in the new-built premises replacing an original building nearby. The windows are colour coded in red, blue ywllo and green to help pupils to navigate around the school and to identify different areas. The work, for main contractor Kier Construction, entailed 55 windows, each with four top-openers, in RAL 7012 Basalt Grey foil on white. The aluminium elements were pressed and powder coated to order for K2 and also included an upright panel between each frame and cill to allow additonal ventilation space beneath the lower openers. Also in the contract were five glazed doors fabricated in Schueco aluminium.  The bespoke elements required careful planning and drawing, as K2 commercial manager Liam Bird explained: "It was quite an ususual specification but one where our background in both PVC-U and aluminiun paid dividends. Working with Glazerite on the PVC-U fabrication and with our own experience of aluminium, we were able to complete the work to specification and without problems and the result speaks for itself." The Glazerite UK Group is VEKA's largest trade fabricator in the UK and a long-standing member of the Independent Network and its predecessor Network VEKA. It offers a fully nationwide service based on manufacturing units in Northants, Peterborough and Greater Manchester as well as its South West distribution hub in Bristol serving South Wales and The West of England.
