Glazerite chairman John Hewitt raises nearly £80,000 for charity

Glazerite UK Group’s Chairman, John Hewitt, has completed his epic 1,000-mile cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End in memory of his late daughter Kelly, who took her own life in 2018.

John was joined by 11 friends and family - nicknamed Kelly’s Heroes - for the arduous 13-day challenge, which saw them climb 59000ft and battle through wind, rain and occasional sunshine. As a result, the team has raised an incredible £80,000 so far for the charity We Mind & Kelly Matters, which John and Kelly’s mum and sister set up to honour the 24-year-old.

John explains: “Kelly took her own life following a short battle with anxiety and depression, something which sadly affects millions around the world. We don’t want anyone else to experience the pain we have, and we feel that the best way to remember Kelly is to do something positive in her memory and support others who are struggling with mental health issues.”

Kelly’s Heroes set off from John O’Groats last month and arrived in Land’s End on Friday 28th August to a socially distanced crowd of well-wishers. Remarkably, many of the people they passed or met on the route have since donated to the charity, something which really touched the team.

John adds: “It was a memorable experience for us all. The pain we experienced was wiped out by the jubilation we felt when we reached the end of each day. The hardest part for me was cycling up the Kirkstone Pass in Cumbria in extremely windy conditions. I was in tears, but I knew I had to keep going, not for me, but for Kelly, and those who struggle with their mental health daily.”

Prior to and during the ride, Kelly’s Heroes received huge support in the form of sponsorship and donations from the fenestration industry, as well as suppliers and customers, including main sponsors VEKA and the Independent Network. John adds: “Myself and the team have been hugely supported by many of Glazerite’s suppliers, customers and competitors, and many others from the industry. It’s been such a huge outpouring of support for what is a global problem that affects us all in some way or other, and the whole team are immensely grateful. We couldn’t have done it without them and every penny raised will go towards educating people and suicide prevention. The support received will literally help save lives.”

The team also received messages of support from sporting legends including former Arsenal and England footballer Kelly Smith MBE, current and former Northampton Saints rugby players Harry Mallinder, Alex Waller and Steve Thompson MBE, and cycling commentator Phil Liggett MBE.

The next steps for We Mind & Kelly Matters are to continue to promote awareness of mental health issues in Northamptonshire’s schools and businesses, where Glazerite has its headquarters, as well as support the work of other charities like MIND.

There are also plans afoot for another cycling challenge in 2022. John adds: “We will never forget Kelly and we will do all we can to help others in the same position she was, and hopefully make a difference.”

Glazerite appoints new Production Manager for its North West Division
The Glazerite UK Group Ltd has appointed a new Production Manager for its North West Division in Bolton. Michael St Ledger, who joins the trade fabricator on 6th April 2021, will oversee the site’s 32-strong operations team and manufacturing processes, with a focus on improving efficiencies. Glazerite’s Bolton site, which manufactures much of the fabricator’s VEKA portfolio, has undergone a major investment and expansion programme over the last two years, and has recently welcomed the arrival of a new site lead in Managing Director, Darren Rhodes. Darren says of Michael’s appointment: “Michael has extensive experience in manufacturing in the fenestration industry and brings with him new ideas, a passion for quality and a focus on customer service. We are looking to further strengthen the performance of the site and having Michael as part of the team will help us increase our service levels and effectiveness.” Michael adds: “I am excited to be joining Glazerite and I am looking forward to meeting and working with all the team. I come from a background in aluminium windows and bi-fold doors, so it will be good to transfer that knowledge and build on it for a successful career at Glazerite.”

Glazerite installer Bahama Windows showcases radiant R9 install
Home Counties-based Bahama Windows and Conservatories has recently completed a Residence 9 installation using frames manufactured at fabricator Glazerite UK Group’s Specials Division. The four-week job involved the replacement of over 30 wooden frames on a period property in Buckinghamshire, and also included the installation of French doors and a Solidor stable door. Bahama Windows and Conservatories’ owner, Paul Pixley says: “The new windows had to be in keeping with the area and like-for-like with the old wooden frames. Because Residence 9 frames replicate the traditional look of timber, choosing this system meant the homeowner could get a close match to the original windows, coupled with the modern benefits and low maintenance nature of uPVC.” The homeowner chose Clotted Cream on both the exterior and interior of the frame, and selected Monkey Tail handles for an authentic finish on the hardware. Both they and Paul were delighted with the finished result. The R9 install from Bahama Windows took place last autumn shortly after Glazerite introduced Timberweld® technology to the fabrication of its Residence 9 and Residence 7 products. Timberweld allows for greater efficiency in manufacturing and eases frame transportation for the customer as windows can be ordered unglazed, therefore removing the additional weight of bonded glass. Bahama Windows, which has been established for 50 years, has worked with Glazerite for over a decade and regularly installs VEKA, Halo and Residence Collection windows. Now Paul is looking ahead to more R9 installs this year, having seen a recent increase in requests for flush sash windows across his patch. Paul says: “Working with Glazerite gives us access to a broad portfolio of products including heritage windows, which means I can meet the expectations of my customers when it comes to quality, style and colour.” Jeff Dunn, Sales and Marketing Director for Glazerite adds: “Manufacturing R9 with Timberweld opens this premium product up to more of our installer base as a result of easier transportation and handling, without losing any of its authenticity. We’ve already seen a number of our installers begin to specify the system as a result of this and look forward to the opportunities it can bring to their businesses. “Residence 9 is a truly exceptional product and the end result from Bahama Windows is really striking. We’re delighted to have played a part in enabling Paul and his team to specify the product and we’re looking forward to working with them again on future Residence 9 installs.”

Glazerite outlines 2021 investment plans to help installers meet growth aspirations
The Glazerite UK Group Ltd has announced a series of investments designed to leverage growth potential for those installer partners looking to stake their claim. Totalling £500,000, the leading trade fabricator’s investments demonstrate a commitment to its customers and the Group’s own long-term aspirations. A significant part of the investment will increase Glazerite’s capacity and how it manufactures its flush sash products to accommodate the rise in market demand, with the installation of new machinery at its Glazerite East site in Peterborough taking place next month. Refurbishment of key equipment at its Wellingborough plant has also been undertaken to improve product quality, while new hanging benches and racks have been installed at its Specials Division. The fabricator has also added new vehicles to its fleet in order to enhance its delivery service. Robert Brearley, Glazerite’s Group Managing Director, says: “We have ambitious growth plans for both our business and our customers and investment is key to achieving those aims. In addition to new equipment we’re also investing in our marketing support packages, which will be rolled out this year. This includes a fresh new branded website and a social media toolkit, which will help our installers showcase their products and services to customers. Our marketing team is continually developing tools and assets to support our installers, giving them access to resources that will help elevate them in their own markets.  Glazerite has also been putting the finishing touches on last year’s set of investments, which saw major expansion and the installation of a brand-new showroom at its North West site in Bolton. Over the last few months, we’ve taken stock of where we are as a business and what improvements we can make across the Group. We’re in the process of rolling out a continuous improvement strategy to optimise efficiencies and allow for greater visibility of the end-to-end process.
