Glazerite welcomes return of Pro-AM golf day

After a challenging 18 months of postponed social and industry events, the Glazerite UK Group swung back into action this month with the return of its much-loved charity golf day.

Now in its 15th year, the Pro-Am tournament was rescheduled from its usual July date to Friday 3rd September at Wellingborough Golf Club, with customers, suppliers and employees taking part in the competition and evening celebration. Thanks to generous donations from players and sponsors, the event raised over £4,000 for Glazerite’s nominated charity, We Mind & Kelly Matters, which was founded in 2019 by former chairman, John Hewitt.

The golf day ‘teed off’ just after 8.30am with 35 teams playing right through to mid-afternoon. Quickslide’s Adrian Barraclough won the ‘Nearest the Pin’ at the 4th hole, while the competition’s ultimate victors were the team led by Dave Jones, formerly of VEKA. Dave played alongside golf professional, Ryan Evans, VEKA Area Sales Manager, Dan Liles, and club member, Glen Gulla, with Ryan setting a club record at his home course with 63 (-9). During a heart-felt speech, Ryan generously donated his prize-winnings to We Mind & Kelly Matters, and thanked Glazerite for the sponsorship he was given by the fabricator at the outset of his professional career.

Despite the event taking place later on in the year than usual, the sun shone for the golfers, who later celebrated with an evening reception alongside their partners and colleagues. Liam Bird, of K2 Aluminium, who travelled to the event from the Wirral, said: “The Glazerite Trophy is always the highlight of my golfing calendar, and the Wellingborough course is superb. From start to finish, it’s always a very well put together event and a terrific experience. I’m very grateful to Glazerite for getting it up and running again this year; it was great to take part and see all those faces that have been missed over the last year.”

Rob Brearley, Glazerite’s Group Managing Director, was taking part in his first Glazerite golf day since joining the fabricator.

He added: “It was great to finally be able to socialise with some of our customers, suppliers and staff in such a beautiful setting. I have been with the company over a year now and it’s crazy to think this is the first opportunity to do what would usually have come very naturally in the first month or two in a new role. Since taking over the business there has been a lot of change, but our continued support of the Glazerite PRO AM trophy and our nominated charity, We Mind & Kelly Matters, will remain.”

We Mind & Kelly Matters’ John Hewitt said: “I’ve loved doing the golf day over all these years and the feedback I get from fellow golfers, the club, friends and the industry is that it is one of the best. I’m thrilled that Rob is looking to keep it going. I also really appreciate the support everyone has shown for our charity and their generous donations, including Ryan’s prize money. It has been a true pleasure to watch him progress to the great golfer he is today.”

Glazerite directors mark MBO anniversary
Directors at the Glazerite UK Group have marked a year at the helm of the nationwide fabricator, following last summer’s management buyout. Led by Group Managing Director Rob Brearley, alongside fellow directors Mark Johnston, Jeff Dunn, Darren Rhodes, and Matthew Thomas, the team has spearheaded a number of improvements to unlock further opportunities for its customers, against a challenging backdrop of raw material shortages and energy price hikes. Rob explains: “Glazerite was already a highly respected company staffed by dedicated employees when we took it over. Following completion of the MBO in July 2021, we’ve begun to rollout a programme of improvements to further benefit installers, our people, and how we operate as a business.” Recent changes have included a sixth site, with the opening of Glazerite North in Barnsley. Meanwhile, investment into new machinery and equipment has continued across the business, as well as the addition of new vehicles that meet Low Emission Zone (LEZ) emission standards, making deliveries to LEZ-based customers easier and more sustainable. Strides have also been made to embed a lean culture across the fabricator, with best practice ways of working implemented in the customer services and order processing teams, headed up by longstanding Glazerite employee, Melanie Jacobs. Rob adds: “Our people are the foundation of everything we do. By encouraging contributions and input from everyone, we have been able to strip out unnecessary, time-consuming, and costly tasks across all functions. This is particularly notable in the manufacturing side at each division, where we’re embedding lean principles.” Development of staff and diversity is also top of the Glazerite agenda, with Rob adding: “In addition to empowering employees to contribute ideas on how we run the business, we offer development and a clear career road map. We’ve got some real success stories already, particularly amongst our younger cohort, with the likes of 24-year-old Oliver Bailey heading up purchasing at our North West Division, and Eleanor Austin, 23, being promoted to Purchasing Manager at our site in the Midlands.” The next 12 months are set to be just as busy for the fabricator, as Glazerite continues to expand its product portfolio, giving customers even greater choice, service and support. Rob concludes: “We’ve taken the reigns at the toughest of times and had to contend with some tough external factors such as raw material shortages, nationwide resourcing issues, and spiralling prices. Fortunately, we’ve navigated these successfully and look forward to realising our ambitions for growth.”

Proudly supporting #PrideMonth across our Glazerite Divisions
Dan Partridge is a Senior Customer Advisor for Glazerite, and is based at our Wellingborough, Northants HQ. Having previously worked for us until 2016, Dan rejoined Glazerite last year and manages a number of our key customer accounts. In celebration of #PrideMonth, Dan has organised our first ever Glazerite Pride Day, which takes place across the group on Thursday 30th June when our teams will celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community by wearing rainbow-themed clothing or accessories. Here, Dan shares what Pride means and how we, as an employer, colleague, friend, and ally, can support a safe, inclusive and open culture for everyone. Dan says: "Pride marks a celebration of social and self-acceptance as well as the achievements of legal rights such as the right to marry or adopt. Pride Month is celebrated every June to coincide with the anniversary of the first Pride Marches, which took place in the USA in 1970, a year after the police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City, where people were arrested just for being members of this community. "It's thanks for the Pride movement and these historical marches that the community is able to celebrate and be our authentic selves. I approached our Managing Director, Rob Brearley, to ask if our employees could wear something rainbow themed on 30th June to mark the occasion at our Wellingborough site. I was pleasantly surprised to be asked to roll this our across the entire group and to be encouraged to decorate our offices with flags to celebrate #Pride. "As an openly gay man, it is very important to me to be able to work for a company that encourages and supports this celebration and is inclusive. I am proud to say I work alongside other members of this community and there are so many accepting members of staff of all backgrounds. So Happy Pride 2022 to all and remember the following quote from Danielle LaPorte - Being your true self is the most effective formula for success there is."
